A Day on the Train – A Railway Journey, Railway Adventures & Cultural History of Railways A Study Day on Friday 16th February 2024 at The Menuhin Hall, Stoke d’Abernon  Registration 9.30

Speaker – Paul Atterbury Introduction A Day on the Train is an exploration of the social, cultural, economic and technical revolution prompted by the development of Britain’s railway network in the Nineteenth Century, and its enduring impact today.

Architecture, engineering, art and landscape all feature, along with the trains themselves, and the people who travelled on them.

10.00 The Railway Landscape – The building of the railways, architecture, engineering, the impact on the landscape and the railway legacy.

11.00 Coffee / Tea 11.30 Art and the Train – The artists’ response to the railways, from Turner, David Cox and Frith to Monet and the Impressionists, the Italian Futurists and Hopper and modern realists.

12.30 Lunch – Bring-Your-Own – Tea / Coffee available

1.30 Speed to the West – Great railway posters from the 1920s to the 1960s, illustrating the route of classic expresses from London to the West Country.

2.30 Tea / Coffee 3.00 My Life with Trains – My personal railway journey from childhood train-spotting and camping coach holidays to writing over twenty railway books, via great journeys in Britain and across the world. 4.00 Departure

Speaker – Paul Atterbury is a writer, lecturer, historian, curator and broadcaster specialising in the art, architecture, design and social history of the 19th and 20th centuries. As a writer he has written or edited over fifty books, covering art, antiques and design, travel, canals and railways, history and the First World War. Paul has curated exhibitions for the Victoria & Albert Museum and for other institutions in Britain and the USA and he has worked on the Antiques Roadshow since 1990.
